MELT Training (Mandatory Entry Level Training)

Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) programs have been implemented in Ontario to ensure the safe operation of large trucks on the province’s roads. These programs require a minimum of 103.5 hours of instruction, covering the essential knowledge and skills needed for aspiring truck drivers. Successful completion of MELT, along with meeting other Class A requirements, enables candidates to take the Class A road test at a Drive Test center. Moreover, the training acquired through MELT remains valid for life. In this article, we will explore the significance of MELT in Ontario and its contributions to road safety and professional development.

* Approved as a vocational program under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005

Mandatory entry-level training (MELT) must be completed by individuals in the following situations:
  • Individuals who hold a restricted Class A (AR) license and want to upgrade to a full Class A license.
  • Individuals who previously held a full Class A license that has become invalid (e.g., expired, downgraded, suspended) for three or more years.
  • Individuals who possess a commercial driver’s license from another country.
  • Individuals who have held a Class 1 commercial license (equivalent to Class A) from a Canadian province other than Ontario for less than 12 months. If the license has been held for 12-24 months, there is an option to either complete mandatory entry-level training or take the Class A knowledge and road test.
